Lefty offers no excuses after disappointing week at Congressional

Phil Mickelson's miserable performance in the 111th US Open at Congressional finished the way it started - with a double bogey. The five-time US Open runner-up, who played the first two rounds with Rory McIlroy, saw any lingering hopes of a title bid fall apart on Saturday when he signed for a six-over 77 after coming home in 42. And it was another subdued performance on Sunday with a six at the last - his second double bogey of the week at 18 - seeing him finish outside the top 50 after a closing level par 71. Mickelson, who also disappointed at Augusta when tied 27th, had little explanation for his poor display which started with him dumping his opening tee-shot of the tournament into the water on the par three 10th. Asked about what was missing from his game straight after walking off the course, he told reporters: "I'm not sure yet if I have a great answer for you right now." He stressed though that he had no excuses. "I thought the course was set up great," said Mickelson. "I thought that the soft conditions obviously made it a little bit easier than everybody had hoped. But the set-up was wonderful. I thought it was a well-run event. The people came out and really supported the tournament, and I just didn't play how I had hoped."

Motivation

Mickelson said he would use his flop as motivation for the big events ahead. "It just gets me more geared up to look forward to the British. We have some big tournaments, the British and the PGA, coming up as well as the FedExCup, so I'll have the next two weeks to try and get my game ready and head over to Europe."
