Madrid could get the nod in honour of late Seve Ballesteros

The host nation for the 2018 Ryder Cup will be announced on Tuesday, with five countries in the frame to stage the prestigious event. France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain have all puts in bids as the match is set to be staged on continental Europe for just the second time. The only other occasion was back in 1997 when Seve Ballesteros led Europe to a one-point victory over the United States at Valderrama in Spain. Following the recent death of the five-time major winner, there have been growing calls for Madrid to be awarded the 2018 contest in his honour. However, Le Golf National near Paris, which has staged 18 of the last 20 French Opens, is also considered a strong option, with the closing holes of the course seemingly perfect for the drama of the Ryder Cup. The decision is to be announced at the headquarters of the European Tour at Wentworth. Each bidding nation has had to give financial commitments and outline plans for a lasting legacy of the match. Sweden were originally in the process as well, but pulled out because of their economic situation. They are expected to target 2022 instead.
