Spaniard reignites hopes at Torrey Pines with second round of 69

Sergio Garcia pinpointed a change in attitude as the turning point for his fortunes at the 108th US Open at Torrey Pines. The Spaniard found himself six-over after seven holes of his first round and looked in very real danger of missing the cut. However, he fought back to post an opening 76 and followed that up with an impressive 69 on Friday to leave himself at +4 and back in contention at the season's second major. Garcia revealed after his second round that he forced himself to become more aggressive after his awful start on Thursday and reaped the rewards. "I changed the way I looked at the shots," he told Sky Sports. "I was much more aggressive. "Even when I was hitting it to the safe side I was swinging aggressively. I wasn't hoping it was going to go there, I was making sure it was going where I wanted. "My back nine yesterday (Thursday) was huge. I managed to get it round and still shot only five-over after being six-over through seven and we know how difficult this championship is. "Then today I played very solid, hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens and hit it close a lot of times. I didn't make as many putts as I probably deserved, but the most important thing is I'm two-under through my last 29 holes and that's always good in this tournament." Garcia admitted that his early tee-time on Friday had made a big difference, insisting conditions, and especially the greens, were playing more difficult as the day draws on. "The greens are day and night for playing in the morning to the afternoon," he added. "Yesterday it was so difficult to make putts, there were footprints all over the place, they were really, really firm and it got quite windy and that made it a little tougher. "Today it was easier, well not easier, but not as tough and I guess when you drive it on the fairways it makes it even easier. "The positive thing is I'm back in the tournament and I'm going to have a good weekend."
