England's Laura Davies came up just short in her bid to become the oldest winner in LPGA history in the Mizuno Classic in Japan on Sunday.

The 51-year-old went into the final round tied for the lead at Kintetsu Kashikojima Country Club, but could only card a closing 71 to finish one shot outside the play-off contested by Mi Hyang Lee, Kotono Kozuma and Ilhee Lee.

South Korea's Mi Hyang Lee eventually won with a birdie on the fifth extra hole - all three players had birdied the third extra hole - with Davies sharing fourth place with another eight players on 10 under par.

Davies, whose last LPGA win came back in 2001, covered the front nine in 36 with two birdies and two bogeys before a birdie on the 13th ensured she was firmly in contention.

However, the four-time major winner was unable to find another birdie on the closing stretch as Ilhee Lee was left to rue a bogey on the 17th which dropped her into the play-off.
