Wentworth, one of England’s most famous golf clubs, has been sold for £135m.

The club, whose West Course has staged the European Tour's flagship event – the BMW-sponsored PGA Championship – since 1984, has been bought by Reignwood Investments.

Wentworth, which also has two other 18-hole lay-outs, the East and Edinburgh courses, was previously owned by restaurant entrepreneur Richard Caring.

Caring said in a statement that the club is "in great hands for the next chapter in its amazing story."

Chanchai Ruayrungruang, founder of the Chinese-owned Reignwood Group, said: "Wentworth is a key strategic acquisition for our rapidly growing luxury lifestyle division, whose unique culture we are dedicated to preserving."

Set in Surrey woodland 25 miles west of London, the location is also the headquarters of the European Tour.
