Korean teenager Hyo-Joo Kim birdied the 72nd hole to win the Evian Championship in her first ever major appearance on Sunday.
Australia's Karrie Webb looked set to become the only player to have won all six of the different majors which have existed in her lifetime when she took a one-shot lead down the 18th.
But after the 39-year-old played a poor third shot from the edge of the green, Kim holed from 18 feet for birdie and Webb missed her par putt to hand her 19-year-old opponent the title.
Kim held a one-shot lead overnight and four birdies in her first 12 holes meant she was two clear of the field before three-putting both the 14th and 16th from near-impossible positions on the severely undulating greens.
Webb had looked out of contention after a double-bogey on the second left her six under par, but five birdies in seven holes from the ninth gave the seven-time major winner the lead.
Kim then appeared to have cracked under the pressure when she duffed her approach to the 17th, but produced a superb pitch to three feet to save par and set up the dramatic climax on the 18th.
Kim expressed little emotion on the 18th as she became the third youngest winner of a women's major behind Morgan Pressel and Lexi Thompson, but said afterwards: "I was flying like a bird."
Speaking about her shot from the edge of the 18th green, Webb said: "It was a rush of adrenaline with the belly wedge and the putt was faster than I thought.
"It was a very poor putt and I knew I had to make it for a playoff. I had a lot of good shots and hit every green bar the second hole and it's obviously disappointing, but I gave myself a good chance."
