Wyndham Championship: Nick Watney takes one shot lead after third round in Greensboro

Highlights from day three of the Wyndham Championship.

Nick Watney will take a one-shot lead into the final day of the Wyndham Championship after shooting a bogey-free round of 65 on Saturday.

The American, who sits on 14 under par for the tournament, moved up from second position at the halfway point to edge into the lead after 54 holes.

Watney bagged three birdies on the front nine and picked up two more shots after the turn to finish five-under on the day at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Canada’s Brad Fritsch finished the third day in second place on 13 under par after he also carded a round of 65. Fritsch grabbed three birdies and holed an eagle from the fairway on the par-four eighth.

Overnight leader Heath Slocum dropped back into a share of third position after signing for a round of 68 which included four birdies and two bogeys.

Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson sits alongside Slocum on 12 under par after shooting a 66. Jacobson carded four birdies in row from holes 3-6 but cooled down after that.

Scott Langley, who held the joint lead with Slocum after round two, could only manage a 69 and now lies fifth with Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson for company on 11-under.

Scotland’s Martin Laird was the leading British golfer in a tie for eighth place, a drop of five from his position at the end of Friday’s round.

One of the players Laird shares eighth place with, Andres Romero, shot the lowest round of the day, a 64 which included seven birdies and one bogey.
