Kimi Raikkonen's return to Ferrari for the 2014 season could be confirmed imminently.

While Ferrari continued to insist on Monday that no decision over their 2014 line-up had yet been taken, Sky Sports F1 understood that terms for Raikkonen's return had been finalised between the Scuderia and the Finn's management, although the agreement had yet to be signed.

Further reports overnight suggested that the process had moved on another step and confirmation of Raikkonen's 2014 return was now imminent.

Should it arrive on Tuesday it would be seven years to the day the Finn's original arrival at Maranello as successor to Michael Schumacher was announced.

With Raikkonen appearing to be on the verge of what just several weeks ago had been an unlikely reunion, the effect his arrival might have on Alonso's position - or indeed future - at the team has been thrust into the speculative spotlight.

The Spaniard has enjoyed effective number one status alongside current team-mate Felipe Massa since joining the team in 2010 but the re-hiring of Raikkonen would represent a clear shift in policy at Ferrari.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after Sunday's Italian GP, Alonso made clear that while he understood it would be "team decision" over who partners him next season he would "be only happy" if Massa stayed on.

The double World Champion took part in a subsequent Twitter Q&A session on Monday night and was asked by one fan who he would choose if he could hand-pick his 2014 team-mate.

And although Alonso unsurprisingly didn't name names, he reiterated his "respect" for Massa and insisted any decision "will be good for me".

"Well, I said yesterday to the media it's not possible for me to talk of any name for next year because I have a lot of respect for Felipe," Alonso responded.

"We've been working very hard and close for 4 years to give Ferrari the maximum. Whatever decision the team will take will be good for me and we will keep working to give Ferrari the best results possible."
