Tyre-wear only concern for Australian as team dominate day one

Mark Webber was satisfied with a 'pretty straightforward' Friday as Red Bull topped both practice sessions despite some reliability concerns ahead of the United States GP.

Heading to a brand new venue means teams lack the data they have accumulated over the years at other tracks - meaning they could be presented with a vast array of variables.

But other than some minor concerns about tyre-wear, the Australian said the Circuit of the Americas provided no shocks.

"We know that the tyres are pretty high maintenance so that is something we will have to look into tonight and the rest of it was pretty straightforward in terms of no huge surprises other than the grip level but that is always improving," he told Sky Sports F1.

As for the circuit itself, Webber was not overly enamoured with the layout, hinting that it was another generic Tilke-circuit despite very positive reviews elsewhere.

"It is a pretty quick - particularly the first sector, it is pretty full on. After that it is pretty normal really - sectors two and three are pretty similar to other tracks," he added.

Wide corner entries were supposed to make overtaking at the circuit, but Webber thinks it could be difficult come Sunday.

"Not the easiest circuit I don't think, not the easiest track - particularly when offline is very slippery," the Red Bull driver explained. "But we will see how it goes."

Indeed, with this being the first race at the Austin venue, grip is at a premium and only one racing line will rubber in over the weekend.

"The best way I can describe it is like when you are driving in the snow in the slow lane and you are in the tracks of a lorry in front," said Sky Sports F1's Anthony Davidson.

"And you daringly try to pass him in the middle lane, but it is too risky, too snowy and that is what it is going to be like for the drivers out there. It is pretty much going to be down to single file and it will be only the brave that risk going down the inside."
