Sebastian Vettel admits he was lucky not to be taken out of the Canadian GP when Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa collided on the final lap of the race.

The Williams and Force India drivers collided whilst battling over fourth position and the spinning cars flew either side of Vettel’s Red Bull at turn one.

“Into turn one, I just saw that they were very close to each other and I saw Felipe – or something white – coming in the mirror so at the last second I reacted,” the World Champion said.

“Felipe flashed past. It was kind of surreal but quite lucky that he didn’t hit me.”

Sunday was only the second time Vettel has stood on the podium in 2014, but rather than feeling overjoyed the German expressed frustration after a difficult race which saw him stuck behind the one-stopping Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg.

“From lap 20 onwards probably, after the first stop, it was a couple of laps before I caught Nico and basically my race was over,” he added.

“I couldn’t get past until the end – there was no way for us down the straights, the Mercedes-powered cars were too quick. Equally, we had trouble defending from the Williams behind and I asked to do something with strategy, which I thought was possible.

“It didn’t really help me create something different and it was the pace we clearly had, so in the end I pitted and lost a place to Daniel [Ricciardo].

“But still it’s a very positive day – Daniel’s first win here, first win for Renault in this new era of engines. They had a very good comeback but as we saw today, there’s still quite a lot of work ahead of us because the Mercedes are still quite a lot quicker down the straights.”

Next up for Red Bull is arguably their most important race of the season at their home circuit in Austria and you can see all the action exclusively live on Sky Sports F1.
