Sergio Perez has declared that now is "the time to know" whether or not he has the opportunity to move up the grid with Ferrari or another team for next season.

The Sauber driver's name is one of several that continues to be linked to Felipe Massa's seat for 2013 with the 22-year-old Mexican having the potential advantage of already being linked to Ferrari through the team's young driver programme.

Nonetheless, despite what at one point was intense speculation that he was poised to replace Massa as early as this season following his second place finish to Fernando Alonso in Malaysia Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo appeared to rule out hiring Perez for 2013, suggesting "I need more experience and more results" from a would-be team-mate to the Spaniard.

And although Perez himself has previously downplayed talk of a future switch, the former GP2 runner-up has now admitted the time is fast approaching for him to turn his attention to where he will be driving next season, and that he is therefore keen to see what the options are.

"It's been a very busy season so far, but the moment will come soon for me to think about my future," he said.

"If there is an opportunity with them (Ferrari) or another team then it's the time to know.

"I will have to see what the options are, and from that I will decide. But I think I have done a very good job this season. I have proven I have the speed, and the consistency as well."

Since claiming his maiden F1 podium appearance at Sepang Perez has collected just three further points finishes in nine races - although one of these was a second podium in Canada - and he admits his and Sauber's form as a whole has fluctuated.

But the Mexican is still pleased with how his second F1 season has panned out so far and wants to continue performing strongly as he weighs up his options for 2013.

"I've been a little up and down, but many things have to be taken into account. We cannot forget we're still a midfield team, so I'm comfortable with the position I'm in.

"My main target will be to keep having good races, and from then I will decide very soon what my future is going to be."
