Defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel paid tribute to Lewis Hamilton after being pipped to pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Vettel had set the Hungaroring track alight in the early phases of Q3 but it was the Mercedes driver who finished 0.038 seconds faster than the German and 0.332s ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg for a third successive pole finish.

Vettel said: "There wasn't much missing, so Lewis did a good job, put a strong lap in. I was pretty happy with both laps. I was losing out a little in the middle sector.

"It's very twisty and there's a lot of corners in a short amount of time, and maybe I wasn't aggressive enough there. But it's stupid now to sit here and say maybe we should've done this or that.

"In the end I was happy with my lap but it was just not quick enough. Lewis did a good job as you can see from the gap to Nico, you have to respect that. Lewis did an exceptional job - you have to hand it to him."

It was a mixed day for the Red Bull team as Mark Webber struggled with an array of problems and could only finish 10th with the Australian venting his frustrations on Saturday afternoon.

There were less problems for Vettel and although he had to settle with second spot for Sunday's race, he remained upbeat on his chances of repeating his success at the German GP three weeks ago and securing his fifth win of the campaign.

"We should have a good race because the car feels fine and I am quite confident," the 26-year-old added.

"I would have loved to have been a little bit faster and on pole, but we have a good car and are in a good position. I am still in a good position for Sunday."
