Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest time on Day Two of the Young Driver Test - but only in a Toro Rosso before his first 'audition' run in a Red Bull ended in a trip to the gravel after just seven laps.

After the session the Australian admitted the incident had been caused by a driver error, telling the assembled media that it was "just my mistake. I was probably pushing a bit too hard."

Having set the benchmark in the morning of 1.32.972 on medium tyres in the Toro Rosso - a time that would remain the fastest through to the chequered flag - the Australian took over the RB9 from Antonio Felix da Costa after lunch.

However, on his seventh lap for the World Champions, Ricciardo found himself beached in the gravel on the outside of Luffield - far from the ideal way to impress a your prospective employers. The car was quickly recovered and after a quick polish the 24-year-old was back on track completing what appeared to be heavy fuel runs given the times. In total he completed 107 laps - 48 in the Toro Rosso and 59 in the RB9.

A Red Bull junior driver that certainly did impress, however, was Carlos Sainz Jr. The Spaniard took over at the wheel of the STR8 and made an immediate impact on his first time in a Formula 1 car setting the second quickest time of the day, just 0.044 shy of the time set by Ricciardo in the morning.

"Driving the car was an incredible feeling and this track helped because if there is one circuit where you are really going to feel you are in a Formula 1 car then it's Silverstone," Sainz said afterwards.

"As for my impressions of the car, everything about it was amazing, but if I had to pick on one aspect it would be the car's agility and the way it can change direction at 300 km/h. That's something I had never experienced before and it was the most impressive thing for me."

Another driver to have a busy day was Davide Rigon in the Ferrari who completed 97 laps over the Silverstone circuit. Whilst the Italian's times were unspectacular - his quickest a 1:34.053 which was good enough for eighth place - most of his day was spent doing aero runs for the Scuderia.

Reigning GP2 Champion Davide Valsecchi got his first proper outing in the Lotus and set the day's fourth quickest time - a 1:33.554. Other than filling in for an unwell Kimi Raikkonen at the final Barcelona test and completing a handful of laps, the Italian has not had an opportunity to drive on track since the Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test last November making his performance all the more impressive.

Oliver Turvey completed 97 laps for McLaren to give them some much needed mileage with the underperforming MP4-28 finishing fifth fastest, whilst James Calado signed off his first F1 test with another impressive morning in the Force India setting a quickest time of 1:33.957.
