Mark Webber has dismissed Lewis Hamilton's claim that Red Bull currently boast the fastest car in F1 as "mind games".

Hamilton's surprising accolade was delivered as the sport reconvened in the Suzuka paddock on Thursday and defied both the opinion of team-mate Jenson Button and the results of the last four grands prix when a McLaren has topped qualifying on each occasion.

Red Bull and McLaren remain at loggerheads in the Constructors' Championship and, speaking in the wake of setting the fastest time in Practice Two at Japan on Friday, Webber scorned Hamilton's comment with the suspicion that the Englishman had simply been trying to score a pressure-inducing psychological point.

"I think if we go through the last five races in terms of who has been on the front row, I think he is just playing mind games which won't work on us," he told Sky Sports F1.

"We know we have work to do, they have a strong car as do we, but I don't think anyone is dominant at the minute."

The Australian topped the timesheets in the second session and was pleased with how the day's running had gone.

"I'm pretty happy with that. We executed most of the runs we wanted to do. There was plenty to go through - it is a very tough circuit in terms of getting the right balance. So we have a bit of work to do, but it was a pretty smooth Friday."
