Mark Webber believes team-mate Sebastian Vettel needs to win the title in Austin this weekend - rather than risking the lottery Brazil could throw up.

A number of different permutations would see Vettel crowned World Champion for the third conseuctive season exclusively live on Sky Sports F1 on Sunday - but the most straightforward is a win for the German at the Circuit of the Americas, which would mean Fernando Alonso would need to finish fourth or better.

Despite the track being a brand new venue for the teams, conditions look set to be fairly predictable throughout the weekend, whereas at Interlargos, rain is always a threat.

''Clearly, Austin's a very important weekend because Brazil can throw up some 'funnies','' Webber told Australian newspaper The Age.

''There can be a bit of rain around there, so that's a bit more of a nervous venue. I'm not saying it can't rain at Austin, but Brazil can be incredibly inconsistent with the weather, so that might come into the mix.''

After a disappointing race in Abu Dhabi, Webber will be looking to bounce back and help Red Bull win the Constructors' Championship in Austin and is hoping he will have a good view of the Drivers' title battle along the way.

''Hopefully I'll have a good grandstand seat,'' he added. ''I'll be right in there - we have been at the past few events. Obviously, Abu Dhabi was a bit of a joke, but in the other ones recently we've been right there and I'm looking forward to finishing the season off with some good, really good results.

World Championship permutations:

  • The title race will definitely go to Brazil if Vettel fails to make the podium
  • If Vettel wins then Alonso needs to finish fourth or higher
  • If Vettel finishes second then Alonso must finish eighth or higher
  • If Vettel finishes third then Alonso needs to finish in the points

''And if I manage to see some of the racing unfold close by, then I'll watch how it all turns out. If it's in my mirrors, all the better; if it's just in front, we'll see what happens.''

Webber's race at Yas Marina was immediately compromised by a poor getaway at the lights, which dropped him from second to fifth at the end of the first lap, and the Australian admits it's not an experience he wants to repeat.

''You just don't want to be in the position where you need to be coming back and fighting through because, ultimately, it'll come and bite you in the arse,'' he said.

''When you have a poor start, you're exposed. All of a sudden you have to do some racing, which I'm fine with, but the numbers are a bit more against you in terms of having smooth Sunday afternoons when you get caught in the pack. You might have a little bit of contact here and there, which we did.''
