Bernie Ecclestone would have preferred Michael Schumacher not to have come out of retirement, saying the German may be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Schumacher retired in 2006 only to return to Formula One four years later with Mercedes.

However, in his three seasons back in the sport, the seven-time world champion was largely an anonymous driver and was regularly beaten by his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher failed to win a single race on his return and during the last three years could only make the podium once.

He turns 44 next month and the sport's supremo Ecclestone told the official Formula 1 website: "I would rather he had stopped as a seven-time world champion than stopping now.

"People new to the sport - people who have joined the F1 fan fraternity just recently - will remember Michael now, not as he was.

"They don't see the hero that he was but the human that can fail."
