Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has warned that Toro Rosso need to improve after an underwhelming 2012 season.

The Italian outfit slipped to ninth place in the constructors' standings after rookie pairing Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-√Čric Vergne notched up a total of 26 points.

Sister team Red Bull Racing, meanwhile, won both the drivers' and constructors' titles for the third successive year and while Mateschitz doesn't expect Toro Rosso - whose role is to groom young Red Bull drivers - to reach such heights, he wants more from them.

"Toro Rosso is our rookie team and its goals differ from those of Red Bull Racing," Mateschitz told AUTO.

"But that's not to say we're happy with the development of the car. Significant improvements need to be found and are being called for."

Toro Rosso announced in September that former Force India and Sauber Technical Director James Key had replaced Giorgio Ascanelli in the role.

Ascanelli had overseen Toro Rosso's transition to building their own car - the team having bought chassis built by Red Bull Technology prior to the 2010 season.
