Nico Rosberg: Has put the first laps on Mercedes' 2014 car
The first 2014 Formula 1 cars and their all-new turbo engines have taken to the track after both Mercedes and Renault-powered Toro Rosso completed permitted promotional filming runs.
Although official group testing does not begin until Tuesday (January 28) at Jerez in southern Spain, F1's Sporting Regulations do allow teams the chance to complete two promotional events during the course of the year. The tests may not exceed 100km in length and only demonstration Pirelli tyres can be used.
Mercedes have confirmed they took to a chilly Silverstone on Friday afternoon to give their brand new W05 and eagerly-anticipated V6 turbocharged engine its maiden shakedown. Nico Rosberg completed a total of 40km before dusk fell at 4.30pm.
"Such a great feeling. Just drove my new silver arrow for the first time. It looks quick, but I don't know if it is quick yet!" Rosberg wrote on Twitter.
Renault's V6 power unit has also been in action for the first time with Toro Rosso completing a filming day of their own with Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat in the STR9 at the Misano circuit in Italy.
Meanwhile, fresh from the W05's first laps with Rosberg, Mercedes have confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will give the car its full test debut on Day One at Jerez.
The 2008 World Champion will also drive on Day Three, either side of Rosberg's two days in the car.
The Sky Sports F1 Online team will be providing live commentary of all three winter tests, starting in Jerez on Tuesday January 28, with live updates from trackside also on Sky Sports News.
