Valtteri Bottas says his qualifying performance in Canada gave Williams a motivational boost to the extent that they were a "different team."

The British outfit have been struggling for pace in 2013 and are yet to score a point in the opening seven rounds of the Championship.

However, Bottas took advantage of mixed conditions during qualifying in Montreal to finish third quickest - the team's best grid slot since Singapore last year.

"It was great and as a team I think it reminds us why we are all there - it is because of those results," the Finn told Sky Sports F1.

"Once you get those results, it feels so good and it is very motivating so it felt like a bit of a different team after qualifying.

"I knew it was a really good lap, but didn't have a clue how much it stood out - I was very surprised when my engineer told me I was third."

In the dry of the race Bottas went backwards, eventually finishing 14th, but he says the team will keep developing the FW35 in the hope of breaking into the top ten.

"After such a good qualifying it was not an easy day for us," he added.

"It was just how it is and back to reality and it is just a fact at the moment that we do not have as quick a car as we would like to have. For us it is very important to understand this car first and what is good about it and what is bad about it because the team don't want to make the same mistakes with the next car.

"We are still trying to improve this one, trying to get into the top ten. There is still going to be quite a bit of development this year before we switch."
