The sport had been on the lookout for a new doctor following the decision not to renew Gary Hartstein's contract at the end of last season, the man who replaced the legendary late Professor Sid Watkins in the role in 2005.

In a statement the FIA has now confirmed that Roberts has been made F1's new Medical Rescue Coordinator for the 2013 season and will report Professor Jean-Charles Piette, the FIA's permanent Medical Delegate to F1.

"While Professor Piette will oversee emergency operations from race control, Dr Roberts will deploy to the track. His primary role there is to supervise the response of the local medical team," the FIA statement added.

Dr Roberts is a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care and has been Silverstone's chief medical officer for many years.
