Bernie Ecclestone has delivered a more pessimistic assessment of the Nurburging's chances of staging this year's German GP.

Although the historic circuit's financial problems are well documented, the F1 supremo had indicated last week that July's German round was still most likely to take place as scheduled at the Nurburgring with talks over a deal for 2013 ongoing with the race organisers.

However, in a fresh interview with ESPN F1, Ecclestone has clarified that no deal is yet in place and a decision on whether or not the venue stages the race can even wait until the season is underway.

"We have got a German Grand Prix but we don't know where it is going to be," Ecclestone said. "We have got the race pencilled in. It's on the calendar.

"We can decide it once the season has started."

But asked if the race was still more likely for the Nurburgring, Ecclestone replied: "No. The trouble is that the people that used to be there have gone.

"They haven't got enough money. So we will see."

Ecclestone reiterated that he had been in talks with officials at the circuit in the Eifel mountains recently but "I don't know what is going to happen with Nurburgring".

Hockenheim, which alternatives as host of Germany's grand prix with the Nurburgring for financial reasons, would undoubtedly be offered the race should its counterpart not strike a deal with Ecclestone but would have a far shorter timeframe than normal in which to to sell tickets.
