Tottenham v Newcastle

Last Updated: 08/02/13 10:11am

Tottenham will continue their push for Champions League football when they welcome Newcastle to White Hart Lane on Saturday lunchtime.

Last season the two sides were both battling it out for a top-four Premier League finish after Newcastle proved one of the season's surprise packages but Alan Pardew's men have been unable to recreate last year's form and have found themselves further towards the other end of the table.

For Spurs, however, Champions League football is within their grasp and they will be keen to continue their impressive league form when they entertain the Toon.

Andre Villas-Boas' side currently sit fourth in the table just point behind nearest rivals Chelsea following their 0-1 win over West Brom on Super Sunday.

The Magpies brought in a host of signings in the transfer window and those captures have already returned a dividends with Newcastle registering back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Chelsea.

But they will not take much confidence from last season's trip to White Hart Lane almost 12 months ago when they suffered a 5-0 loss, with Louis Saha - recently released by Sunderland - grabbing a brace for Spurs against his former employers, who were then under the management of Harry Redknapp.

Pardew's men did, however, see off the North Londoners on the opening day of the season at St James' Park, with Hatem Ben Arfa's late penalty clinching the success to ensure Villas-Boas' first outing as manager ended in defeat.

Recent history between the two sides is mixed, with the win on Tyneside in August marking Newcastle's first success over Spurs in six encounters, however the six league games prior to that had all gone the Toon's way.
