Southampton v Everton
Last Updated: 20/01/13 11:01pm
Monday Night Football comes to St Mary's on January 21st when Southampton host Everton in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
It's the first time this fixture has taken place in the Premier League in eight years.
That's because it's been a long road back to the top for Southampton after their relegation from the top flight in 2005. The club even plunged into League One before embarking upon a dramatic revival that culminated in back-to-back promotions and a Premier League return in 2012.
Back in March 2005, James Beattie opened the scoring for the Toffees but Peter Crouch was among the scorers as Saints hit back to earn an entertaining 2-2 draw. Both teams will arguably be hoping for better this time around as they eye points for very different reasons.
New boss Mauricio Pochettino - who succeeded the sacked Nigel Adkins on Friday - finds himself in the midst of a relegation battle. He will also find the heat is on him immediately with Saints fans largely unhappy with the dismissal of their former boss. At the other end of the table, David Moyes' men will not have given up on the UEFA Champions League dream this season - and that means having to win games like this.
Everton had little trouble dealing with Southampton at Goodison Park earlier this season as they ran out 3-1 winners with all four goals coming in a hectic first half. But the Saints are a different proposition on the south coast with their vocal home fans behind them and this promises to be an intriguing contest.
The Toffees are unbeaten on the road since mid-November whilst the Saints are coming off an impressive away win in Premier League against fellow strugglers Aston Villa.
