Wolfsburg saw off the threat of a spirited Freiburg side to return to within 11 points of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a 3-0 win at the VW-Arena.

Kevin De Bruyne put the Wolves ahead in the 19th minute, but the result was always in the balance until Ricardo Rodriguez added a second from the penalty spot with 12 minutes to go.

Maximilian Arnold added a third late on as Wolfsburg further boosted their hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.

It looked like it was going to be an easy afternoon for Wolfsburg after De Bruyne gave them the lead.

The Belgian saw a path open up in front of him, with Marc Torrejon sliding out of his way, and he tucked his shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

De Bruyne pulled another shot wide while Bas Dost missed chances at both posts with Dieter Hecking's men apparently in control of the game.

Freiburg refused to go down without a fight, though, and in the 37th minute Christian Gunter's effort was tipped over by Diego Benaglio.

Benaglio then got down to turn Torrejon's effort towards the far post, where Mike Frantz missed the target from a yard out as he slid in.

The visitors continued to send shots in on Benaglio's goal with Oliver Sorg going close midway through the second half.

The game remained wide open, until De Bruyne appeared to look for a penalty when he nudged the ball past Roman Burki and went down easily.

The referee pointed to the spot and Rodriguez stepped up to send his Swiss compatriot the wrong way and give Wolfsburg some breathing room.

De Bruyne then provided an assist for substitute Arnold to put the result beyond all doubt as he slid in at the far post to make it three in the 84th minute.
