League Two Oxford handed exciting trip to Upton Park

West Ham will be desperate to avoid an upset when League Two Oxford United travel to Upton Park in the Carling Cup. The Hammers have had a poor start to the season after losing comfortably to both Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, as Avram Grant's tenure fails to kick-off with a bang. Oxford have managed two points from three games in the league so far, and will be looking forward to their lucrative second-round trip to East London. Manuel Da Costa and summer signing Tal Ben Haim could come into the West Ham defence for the clash. Hammers boss Grant is anxious for his side to tighten up at the back after conceding six times in their first two games of the campaign. Matthew Upson is doubtful after suffering a blow to the face in Saturday's defeat by Bolton, while midfielders Thomas Hitzlsperger and Valon Behrami are still sidelined.

    Oxford news

Meanwhile, Oxford are likely to be without Damian Batt for the trip. Batt was injured by Kevin Betsy's heavy challenge in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Wycombe and limped out after 11 minutes. The knock on his ankle means he is a major doubt, so manager Chris Wilder is likely to call on Ben Purkiss to fill in at right-back. Wilder also has concerns over striker Matthew Green, another player to be forced off during the weekend's visit to Adams Park. Green sustained a dead leg and is only rated as 50-50 for the game at Upton Park. Alfie Potter and Mitchell Cole are on standby to come into the U's three-pronged attack, alongside James Constable and Jack Midson.
