Wolfsburg piled the misery on Werder Bremen with a 3-0 win at the Weser Stadium.

Wolfsburg piled the misery on Werder Bremen with a 3-0 win at the Weser Stadium to increase the pressure on Thomas Schaaf, leaving his side winless in nine games. Goals from Maximilian Arnold, Ivica Olic and Diego earned the Wolves all three points in their northern Germany rivals' den, giving them a 10-point advantage over the bottom three with four games of the season remaining. Bremen remain just five points above the drop zone in what is already statistically their worst season in Schaaf's near 14-year reign as coach. The pressure is therefore mounting on the under-fire manager, whose future is looking more and more bleak. Arnold, who opened his account for Wolfsburg just a week ago, put the visitors in front in the 13th minute with a speculative shot from distance which found its way through and past an unsighted Diego Benaglio. Bremen tried to respond but found themselves chasing a two-goal deficit in the 27th minute when Olic found a way through and slotted the ball in from a tight angle as Sebastian Mielitz raced out towards him. Schaaf reacted by bringing on an additional striker in Nils Petersen to end Sebastian Prodl's day's work after just 33 minutes. The move did appear to give the home team a lift, but when Marko Arnautovic found the back of the net early in the second half, the goal was ruled out for offside. Arnautovic then missed a golden chance to reduce the arrears when Benaglio missed a Kevin de Bruyne cross, which the Austrian could not turn in at the far post. It was a costly miss as former Bremen forward Diego put the result beyond doubt from the penalty spot in the 66th minute after Vieirinha had been fouled by Ozkan Yildirim.
