Valencia battle back for victory

Valencia marked what could be a bright new dawn for the club with a 2-1 comeback victory over Celta Vigo.

Valencia marked what could be a bright new dawn for the club with a 2-1 comeback victory over Celta Vigo. Los Che announced earlier on Saturday that Singapore billionaire Peter Lim had completed his takeover of the Mestalla outfit, buying a 70 per cent share from the Valencia CF Foundation. That could prove to be a seminal moment for the debt-ridden club and the team welcomed the news with a battling win over Celta in their final match of what has been a largely disappointing season. Celta looked set to rain on Valencia's parade when Inigo Lopez gave them a fifth-minute lead but Los Che fought back to claim the win thanks to goals either side of half-time from Sofiane Feghouli and Pablo Piatti. The result sees Valencia finish in eighth place, level on 49 points with ninth-placed Celta. Celta had come into the match in stunning form having won their last four matches, including a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid last weekend, but they received disappointing news on Friday with coach Luis Enrique confirming he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. Enrique, who has been closely linked with the Barcelona job - now vacant following Gerardo Martino's departure on Saturday - in recent weeks, would have been keen to leave on a high and he was on course to achieve that when Lopez slotted home early on. However, Valencia roared back and only fine saves from Sergio Alvarez to deny Jonas and Michel (twice) kept Celta's lead intact for as long as it was. Los Che would not be denied for too long though and three minutes before the break they drew level when Feghouli headed home. Piatti helped set up that goal and the roles were reversed 10 minutes into the second half as Valencia took the lead, Feghouli the provider on that occasion and Piatti nodding past Alvarez. That would prove to be the match winner for Valencia as Los Che completed their worst season since 1997-98 on a positive note - both on and off the pitch.
