Tranmere progressed to the second round of the JPT after a penalty shoot-out win over Port Vale following a 1-1 draw.

The home side won it thanks to successful strikes by Josh Labadie, Max Power, Robbie Weir and Ash Taylor with only John Welsh missing. Chris Martin and Clayton McDonald scored for Vale but Gary Roberts and Tom Pope failed with their kicks. The tie was marred by a serious injury to Vale striker Lewis Haldane, who was stretchered off after lengthy attention midway through the second period. Tranmere nearly made a dream start but Josh Labadie hit the crossbar from 25 yards inside 15 seconds. The Merseysiders then missed a glorious chance to take the lead from the spot after six minutes when Mustafa Tiryaki was tripped by McDonald but Mark McChrystal hit the crossbar before the ball was scrambled clear. Vale went ahead three minutes after the break. A Haldane shot after a great run struck the arm of keeper Owain Fon Williams and was headed in by Rob Taylor. Tranmere grabbed a lifeline after 88 minutes with Taylor heading in from a cross by Weir before winning the shoot-out.
