In-form Lorient powered to a fourth straight win to continue their march up the Ligue 1 table with a 2-0 victory over St Etienne at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Jeremie Aliadiere and Alain Traore were on target in the first half as Lorient maintained their impressive run which began with victory over Toulouse and continued apace against Marseille and Sochaux. Christian Gourcuff's men have not conceded a goal in that sequence and are now up to fourth place having recovered superbly from a seven-game winless run earlier in the season. St Etienne will be hopeful of mounting a similar salvage operation in the coming months after they slumped to a fourth match without a win that sees them drop to eighth. Twenty minutes were on the clock when the visitors went ahead after Benjamin Corgnet picked out Aliadiere on the right wing, the former Arsenal man cutting inside and beating two defenders before sending a smart finish beyond Stephane Ruffier. Corgnet nearly doubled the lead three minutes later when his testing shot from 18 yards forced a superb two-handed save from Ruffier. Traore fired into the side-netting 60 seconds later as a Lorient side coursing with confidence continued to dominate. The second goal duly arrived six minutes before the interval as Enzo Reale beat Faouzi Ghoulam before crossing into the area where Traore rose above Moustapha Bayal Sall to head home. St Etienne improved after the break with Wesley Lautoa forced to clear off the line from Fabien Lemoine's strike in the 57th minute, while Fabian Audard made a great save from the same player inside the final 10 minutes to preserve his clean sheet. Lorient had chances to add to the scoring after the break but Aliadiere was denied by Ruffier and Kevin Monnet-Paquet flashed wide when well placed.
