Saints v Sheff Wed preview

Image: Poortvliet: Could be unchanged

Jan Poortvliet could name an unchanged Southampton team against Sheff Wed, who are without Jermaine Johnson.

Euell available for Saints, but Johnson missing for Owls

Jan Poortvliet is toying whether to change his Southampton team against Sheffield Wednesday, who are without Jermaine Johnson. Saints boss Poortvliet has named an unchanged team for the last three games, but has Jason Euell back after a three-match ban. Euell's return has increased Poortvliet's options and the experienced midfielder could return to the side at St Mary's. Skipper Michael Svensson has suffered another injury setback and is unlikely to be available until Manchester United's FA Cup visit in early January due to an Achilles problem. Young centre-half Olly Lancashire could be in contention after playing for the reserves on Wednesday having been out for three weeks with a knee injury, although Chris Perry and Jack Cork will hope to keep their places following Saints' consecutive clean sheets. Striker Tomas Pekhart is doubtful with ankle trouble, midfielder Anthony Pulis (foot) is close to a return, but defender Wayne Thomas and winger Lee Holmes (both knee) are still sidelined.

Wednesday news

The Owls will head to the South Coast without winger Johnson, who has suffered damage to his medial knee ligaments. The Jamaica international is expected to be out for four weeks, with Etienne Esajas expected to step in. Defender Tommy Spurr is closing on a return after missing the last three matches due to a bruised thigh, while Frank Simek could feature after Tony McMahon returned to Middlesbrough. Wade Small is also fit again following a hamstring problem and he gives manager Brian Laws an alternative option out wide in place of Johnson. Midfielder Steve Watson remains sidelined with a hip injury and defender Peter Gilbert misses out again due to Achilles tendon damage. New loan signing Bartosz Slusarski is hoping to start. The West Brom striker stepped off the bench last week following his arrival on loan.
