Pearson strike only consolation for new-boys

Burton began life in the Football League with a 3-1 defeat at last year's play-off finalists Shrewsbury on the first Saturday of the season. The Brewers impressed on their Football League debut but new goalkeeper Shane Redmond should have prevented Shrewsbury's first and third goals. Jake Robinson, one of 15 debutants on the field, needed only 10 minutes to beat the former Nottingham Forest and Republic of Ireland under-21 keeper from a very tight angle. Joss Labadie, on loan from West Brom, and Dean Holden, a summer signing from Falkirk, carved the opening and were both outstanding. Burton finished the half strongly but went two down after 49 minutes when Dave Hibbert, out of favour last season and a surprise starter for the Town, headed in Kevin McIntyre's centre. Greg Pearson, Albion's top scorer last season, came on as a sub after 57 minutes and only five minutes later pulled one back with a fierce shot from 12 yards and then hit the crossbar a minute later. But eight minutes from time Guy Branston's foul on Nathan Elder earned a yellow card and Labadie's resultant 30-yard free-kick squirmed past Redmond, who redeemed himself twice in injury time with good saves from Paul Murray.
