Levein's men prepare to host Del Bosque's all-conquering outfit

Scotland will need to be more adventurous when they face world and European champions Spain on Tuesday. Craig Levein has come in for criticism following his decision to use a 4-6-0 formation against the Czech Republic on Friday and knows he must break those shackles at Hampden Park in midweek. A 1-0 defeat in Prague was not enough to see Scotland slip from second spot in Group I, but they have handed the initiative to their rivals and will be desperate to bounce back. The problem for Levein and his troops is that they could not have been handed a tougher task in their efforts to return to winning ways. Spain arrive in Glasgow as World Cup holders and defenders of the European Championship crown. They have made a perfect start in their efforts to reach the 2012 tournament, with seven goals plundered in their two fixtures to date. Vicente del Bosque has been keen to play down the invincibility of his side prior to their latest outing, insisting that they will not be underestimating the Scots. Spain, though, are the number one ranked side in the world and Scotland, ranked 47th in Fifa's list, will need to raise their game considerably if they are to spring a surprise.

Team news

Levein is hoping his cause will be aided by welcome news on the fitness front, with a number of key men still carrying niggling knocks. Alan Hutton, Gary Caldwell, Steven Whittaker and Graham Dorrans all missed training over the weekend and their participation remains in question. Tottenham full-back Hutton is believed to be the biggest doubt, with Sunderland's Phil Bardsley in line to make his debut should the Spurs man miss out. Rangers' Lee McCulloch could come into contention on Tuesday, although a change of system could see him benched. With Kenny Miller expected to be returned to the starting XI after being left out against the Czechs, Levein will resist the urge to pack the midfield. It will be in the middle of the park that Spain will look to control proceedings, and they will have Xabi Alonso available once more. The former Liverpool man missed Friday's 3-1 win over Lithuania with flu, but is now back to full health. Sergio Ramos picked up a slight knock to his ankle last week but the Real Madrid defender is also expected to line-up against the Scots.
