Image: Goodwillie: Expected to lead the line for Scotland against Lithuania

Scotland must put the Czech Republic controversy behind them and focus on beating Lithuania to keep their Euro 2012 hopes alive.

Goodwillie primed for first international start

Scotland must somehow put Saturday's controversial match with the Czech Republic behind them and focus on getting the win they require against Lithuania to keep their slim Euro 2012 hopes alive. The Scots are still smarting after Dutch referee Kevin Blom awarded a penalty to the visitors in the final few minutes of Saturday's match at Hampden, despite there appearing to be no contact between defender Danny Wilson and Czech forward Jan Rezek. Michal Kadlec slammed home the spot-kick to deny Scotland the win, who were infuriated still further when referee Blom failed to award a penalty at the other end minutes later when Christophe Berra appeared to be tripped in the box. The damaging 2-2 draw means that Scotland are five points behind the Czechs in the race to finish second behind runaway leaders Spain in Group I. With the world and European champions lying in wait in their final group game, Scotland have to win against Lithuania on Tuesday and away to Liechtenstein on October 8th to have any chance of making a play-off spot. Even then Levein knows the Czechs have to drop points in their final group matches against Spain and Lithuania in order for his side to have a chance.

    Gloomy picture

Despite the gloomy picture Scotland can at least point to a decent recent record against Lithuania as reason for optimism. They have won three and drawn one of their last four meetings with the Baltic country, who have lost seven of their last eight away internationals, failing to score in each of the last three. Lithuania mathematically also have a chance of finishing second, but they would need to win both of their remaining games against Scotland and the Czech Republic as well as relying on results elsewhere. Levein's preparations have been disrupted by a growing number of injuries and suspensions. Kenny Miller and Scott Brown will miss the game after picking up yellow cards on Saturday, while Craig Mackail-Smith and Charlie Adam have pulled out due to injury. The pressure, therefore, will be on young Blackburn striker David Goodwillie, who will start a Scotland game for the first time in will be only his second international apperance. Elsewhere Levein makes three other changes from Saturday's game. Alan Hutton hasn't recovered from a groin injury so will be replaced by Rangers' Steven Whittaker. Barry Bannan and Don Cowie replace the injured Adam and suspended Scott Brown in the centre of the park. Phil Bardsley is fit to start despite suffering a dead leg at the weekend. Lithuania coach Raimondas Zutautas is expected to make changes following their disappointing goalless draw at home to Liechtenstein on Friday. He is definitely without winger Edgaras Cesnauskis, who was sent off late on in that game.
