Valencia tackle Germans in Group B

Schalke entertain Valencia in Group B as they begin their quest to progress to the second round of the UEFA Champions League for the first time. Mirko Slomka's side finished as runners-up in the Bundesliga last term but have made a stuttering start to the new campaign, drawing four of their first five games. Slomka feels Chelsea, who play Rosenborg, are favourites to top the group, but is confident his side can take second place. However, Schalke will be without Levan Kobiashvili, Mathias Abel, Gustavo Varela and Mladen Krstajic due to injury. Rafinha is also doubtful, while Slomka will have to watch from the stands after collecting a one-match ban last season. Valencia crashed out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals last season as they lost 3-2 to Chelsea on aggregate. The Spanish side cruised past Elfsborg in qualifying and will be hoping to notch their fourth consecutive win in all competitions. Vicente and Marco Caneira are both out injured, but Quique Sanchez Flores otherwise has a fully-fit squad to choose from.
