      Spalletti's side defeat Portuguese opposition

Roma were 2-1 winners over Sporting Lisbon at the Stadio Olimpico to give them the advantage in the race to reach the UEFA Champions League knockout phase from Group F. Substitute Mirko Vucinic scored the winner for Luciano Spalletti's side 20 minutes from time after Juan's headed opener had been cancelled out by Liedson inside the first 18 minutes.

      Fast start

Roma gave Sporting a couple of early scares. First, Mancini raced into the box and teed up Francesco Totti who failed to make contact with the ball six yards out, before Philippe Mexes fired just over from a corner. Mexes' fellow central defender Juan found the back of the net in the 15th minute as he met David Pizarro's corner in front of Sporting keeper Tiago and headed home from 10 yards out. But the visitors responded immediately and three minutes later were level through a header of their own. Abel stood up a cross to the far post for Liedson and the Brazilian striker powered a header past Doni. Totti and Yannick Djalo exchanged shots which went wide and Juan missed a great chance to get his second by heading over unmarked inside the Sporting box during an action-packed first-half.
      Missed opportunities
Roma were given the chance to restore their lead moments after the break when Vucinic was felled in the area. Mancini stepped up from the spot but was denied by Tiago diving low to his right. Mancini wasted another opportunity on the hour mark when he blazed over in a good position, and Sporting went straight up the other end and forced a save from Doni from Marat Izmailov's shot. Vucinic scored an excellent individual goal as Roma regained the lead on 70 minutes. The Montenegro international made a determined run into the Sporting area, powering past Abel, before beating Tiago from a tight angle. Sporting had a late chance to snatch a point with Miguel Veloso's free-kick from distance, but the effort was straight at Doni and Roma managed to see out the four added minutes.
