Penalty misses by Simon Hackney and Gary Madine handed Rochdale victory and a passage through to the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as they beat Carlisle 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Carlisle were a goal up just four minutes into the match when Michael Bridges rifled home Jennison Myrie-Williams' cut back. The home side responded well, levelling in the ninth minute when Adam Rundle crossed from the right for Lee Thorpe to head past Ben Williams. Keith Hill's men snatched the lead in the 15th minute when Chris Dagnall seized upon a poor back pass from Evan Horwood, rounding Williams and defender Danny Livesey before firing into the unguarded goal. Bridges was unlucky minutes into the second period when he raced on to Danny Graham's pass and shot on target only for Sam Russell to pull off a tremendous save, palming the effort onto the foot of the post and out to safety. Carlisle levelled the tie in the 71st minute when Madine's long range drive took a deflection, completely bamboozling Russell and flying into the roof of the net, but Hackney and Madine both missed from the spot while Dale netted all four of their penalties to progress.
