Rennes and Evian battled out an uninspiring 0-0 draw at the Stade de la Route de Lorient on Saturday evening - a result which did little to alleviate either team's Ligue 1 relegation worries. The sides headed into the game without a win between them in their last four league outings, and with a combined tally of just 42 goals all season. Olivier Sorlin struck the post for Evian 13 minutes from time, but that was as close as either team got to breaking the deadlock, and both sides remained languishing uncomfortably close to the drop zone. The visitors had the first chance of note after nine minutes, when Daniel Wass headed over the bar from Youssouf Sabaly's cross. That was as good as it got for Evian in the opening period, though, with Rennes going closer to breaking the deadlock thereafter. Evian required goalkeeper Bertrand Laquait to be alert to preserve their clean sheet, firstly to beat away a fierce Abdoulaye Doucoure volley from Silvio Romero's set-up and then to brilliantly divert the ball away for a corner after Tiemoue Bakayoko had cut in and unleashed a dangerous shot. Laquait again had to be alert at the start of the second half to keep out a Romero blast. Evian had a rare sight of goal just after the hour mark when Wass found Nicolas Benezet near the penalty area, and he curled a shot inches wide. Rennes mustered several more chances as the half wore on, but found Laquait equal to all of them. He kept out a Foued Kadir snap-shot and a thunderous drive from Romain Alessandrini, among another efforts. For all their pressure, Rennes were unable to find the breakthrough and the visitors almost caught their hosts with a sucker-punch towards the end when Sorlin connected Pape Sougou's cross, but his volley crashed against the woodwork and away to safety.
