Ajaccio's bid for Ligue 1 survival will go to the final day of the season, although they moved to the brink of safety thanks to Saturday evening's draw at Rennes.
With just one game remaining, Ajaccio are three points above the relegation zone and they would have to suffer an extreme goal swing to go down.
Fousseni Diawara gave Ajaccio a sixth-minute lead only for Mevlut Erding to equalise in first-half stoppage time.
It was a dream start for Ajaccio with Diawara slotting home a close-range shot.
Rennes came within inches of drawing level after half an hour when Erding controlled and volleyed a left-footed shot which crashed against the left post.
Adrian Mutu then squandered a great chance to double the lead when he was outwitted by Benoit Castil with only the Rennes goalkeeper to beat.
The visitors were made to regret it when Erding headed home Steven Moreira's cross on the stroke of half-time.
Again Mutu had a chance to restore the lead but his close-range attempt was kept out by Costil.
Jean Makoun sent a 20-yard drive inches wide for the hosts but there were boos for coach Frederic Antonetti at the final whistle.
Antonetti revealed last month he will stand down from the role in the summer after a disappointing campaign in which they currently stand 11th in Ligue 1.
