Smith's men to meet Partick after narrow win

Rangers set up a Scottish Cup quarter-final date with Partick Thistle after a battling 1-0 win over Hibernian in their replay at Ibrox. Chris Burke scored the only goal of a keenly-contested tie just before half-time, although Rangers had to play the final stages with 10 men after Nacho Novo was sent off. Steven Whittaker had the first meaningful shot of the game when he forced a save out of Hibs keeper Yves Ma-Kalambay, while Lee McCulloch then headed narrowly off target. Hibs striker Steven Fletcher stung the palms of Gers keeper Neil Alexander before the hosts grabbed the decisive goal on 39 minutes. Steven Davis set up Burke and the Rangers winger found the gap to fire his shot between defenders and beyond Ma-Kalambay. Rangers could have extended their lead before half-time, with both McCulloch and Barry Ferguson seeing attempts cleared off the line.

Golden chance

And before the half-time whistle sounded, Steven Naismith was only denied by the crossbar after his header beat Ma-Kalambay. Hibs started the second period brightly and former Rangers midfielder Ian Murray saw his shot deflected just over the crossbar. Fletcher also had a couple of sights of goal before substitute Novo demanded a penalty for handball after his attempt struck Chris Hogg. Ex-Hibs midfielder Kevin Thomson wasted a golden chance to wrap the game up for Gers before Novo was sent off 10 minutes from the end for a two-footed tackle on Thierry Gathuessi. Gers boss Walter Smith was sent to the stands for protesting against the decision, but his side saw out the closing moments to set up a last-eight meeting with Partick.
