After a goalless first half the game burst into life with two goals in four minutes.
Racing broke the deadlock on 57 minutes when Mohamed Tchite latched onto Jonathan Pereira's pass to fire the ball past Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer.
The lead proved short-lived as Orlando Engelaar found the net with a shot from the edge of the box after being fed by Jefferson Farfan.
The draw was good enough to move Schalke to the top of Group A with four points from their first two games, while Racing have one point to their name.
