Carlisle beat Oldham 4-2 on penalties to reach the Carling Cup second round following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Paul Dickov's men led through Reuben Reid's 24th-minute penalty but Jon-Paul McGovern converted a second-half free-kick to level the scores and the Cumbrians kept their cool in the spot-kick shootout. The Latics opened the scoring when Liam Noble fouled Dean Furman and Reid stepped up to convert from the spot. Yet Carlisle steadied themselves and gradually gained a foothold on proceedings before equalising three minutes before the hour mark. Craig Curran showed neat skill to engineer the space before he was fouled by Alex Diamond and McGovern stepped up to fire a superb right-footed shot into the top corner. Curran almost put the Cumbrians ahead moments later when his effort flashed just wide from 12 yards, but neither side could find a winner in extra time. Oldham scored two penalties through Furman and Mathieu Smith in the shootout, but efforts from McGovern, Andrew Welsh, James Berrett and Rory Loy sent Carlisle through - goalkeeper Adam Collin playing his part with two penalty saves.
