Akinfenwa on form for Cobblers

Adebayo Akinfenwa made it eight goals in seven starts with another double as Northampton beat Aldershot 3-1 at Sixfields.

Northampton's Luke Guttridge should have done better against his former club when he shot wide early on, while Aaron Morris blazed over for the visitors. Ben Tozer was just off target with a fierce drive before Cobblers broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Tozer's long throw-in was helped on by Akinfenwa and defender Kelvin Langmead volleyed home at the far post for his second goal in as many games. Ben Smith twice went close for the visitors, denied by Matt Duke and then shooting over from a decent position. But Cobblers doubled their advantage five minutes before the break when another Tozer long throw-in was headed directly into the bottom corner by Akinfenwa. Cobblers increased their lead shortly after the restart. Michael Jacobs was tripped by Josh Payne as he raced into the box and Akinfenwa despatched the ensuing spot-kick for his 15th goal of the campaign. Aldershot rarely threatened after that but top scorer Danny Hylton grabbed a consolation in stoppage-time, netting from the rebound after Duke failed to hold on to Michael Doughty's effort.
