Patrick Helmes has vowed he is going to stay and fight for a first-team place at Wolfsburg.

Striker does not want to leave Wolfsburg this summer

Germany international Patrick Helmes has vowed he is going to stay and fight for a first-team place at Wolfsburg. It has been predicted that the £4.5million January signing from Bayer Leverkusen will only serve as back up to Mario Mandzukic and Srdjan Lakic this season. But Helmes is confident in his own ability and the striker is not planning on walking away from his contract, which runs until the summer of 2014. He told Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung: "Everyone is invited to believe that the first team will have Mario Mandzukic and Srdjan Lakic as strikers. "But I am fit and possibly some people will look stupid when another one plays in the first team. "I believe in my chances and I know the manager is aware of my work ethic in training. I do not have to walk away. "Much is written, day in and day out. I am contracted to this club for three more years. No-one told me I have to leave."
