Hoeness not prepared to meet Freiburg's asking price for striker

Wolfsburg managing director Dieter Hoeness has revealed the club were priced out of a move for Freiburg striker Papiss Demba Cisse. The January sale of Edin Dzeko to Manchester City left Wolfsburg with a sizeable void to fill up front, but with a healthy transfer kitty to play with. Cisse has impressed for Freiburg this season and was the subject of a transfer window enquiry from struggling Wolfsburg. However, the quoted price deterred Wolfsburg from making a bid and the club have subsequently agreed a deal to sign Srdan Lakic on a free transfer from Kaiserslautern in the summer. And, though Cisse scored Freiburg's winner against Wolfsburg on Saturday, Hoeness acknowledged the club were not prepared to meet the forward's asking price. "Freiburg wanted 19million euros for Cisse whereas Kaiserslautern wanted six for the immediate transfer of (Srdjan) Lakic," Hoeness told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. "You cannot pay sums like that, especially as we want to disprove the general theory that money does not play a role here."
