Mellon praise for Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon spoke highly of his side's performance following their 0-0 draw at Cambridge.

The Shrews sit in an automatic promotion spot at the top of League Two but were denied victory at the Abbey Stadium after hitting the bar twice in the second half. The visitors also saw Chris Dunn deny Bobby Grant with a fine save in injury time, while Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro missed a glorious chance in the first half having broken Cambridge's offside trap. Mellon commented: "We totally dominated for pretty much most of the game and we gave a really good away performance with lots of control. "It's a performance we're delighted with and with the scoreline we feel like we should have come out on top. On another day Cambridge would have found themselves on the end of a different scoreline. "We had some great chances but you've got to take those chances. We're honest enough to know that you've got to do the hardest thing in football and put that ball in the back of the net. "It's pleasing that we're creating those chances away at a really difficult place to come and get a result, but probably from first minute to minute 94 we were the better side. "Performances have been decent but we probably haven't put two halves together like we have here. "We were at it from the first minute but we knew we had to be because Cambridge are a physical side, they make you defend and they ask you questions so we knew we had to be ready for that." Cambridge boss Richard Money agreed that his side had been under pressure throughout but spoke highly of his side's endeavour to earn a point against their highly-fancied opponents. "I think we knew before the game that this would be a proper test for us and a bit of a benchmark on where we are," he reflected afterwards. "In the first I was really pleased with the way we played, I thought we were deservedly level and might have been in front. In the second half they (Shrewsbury) have shown what they are, they're a team that are going places. "They got a bit of a steam up and kept overloading and throwing more players forward. 4-3-3 becomes 4-5-1 and we start to get a little bit deep but we saw it through and some days you've got to walk off the pitch and say that was a really hard-earned point. This was one of those. "To come off the pitch having earned that point in the way that we did, I think the players can come out of the afternoon with a lot of credit."
