Bentley lauds Morecambe

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley praised his side's commitment after their 2-1 victory at Cambridge.

Paul Mullin scored both goals and goalkeeper Barry Roche starred with a string of excellent saves to inflict a first home defeat on the newly-promoted U's, while the Shrimps are the only side in League Two to have won all of their first four fixtures so far. Speaking after the game, Bentley commented: "It's a difficult place to come, there's a passionate crowd and they're a very strong, organised and physical side who put you under loads of pressure. "We've spilt blood on the pitch today, it was a proper battle but thankfully we've got out of here with three points against what I think's a very good side. "I think we'll play better football but I think we looked a threat on the break, we've scored good goals and could have had one or two more but everyone's put their body on the line when they had to. We knew what we were coming to, Cambridge have got the winning mentality from last year but we've dug in when we had to and rode our luck when we had to. "Maybe last season when they got us back to 1-1 we could easily have crumbled when they were attacking towards their home fans and had that momentum but we stood strong and got that important second goal which settles the game." Home boss Richard Money was upbeat about his side's performance but disappointed by the match officials, who let Mullin return to the field after changing his shirt following a blood injury at a time he felt was inopportune. "The reaction of the crowd at the end says it all. They've stood up to a man and given the team a standing ovation. I thought we were outstanding. In terms of going forward we're developing into a really good team. I don't know how many chances they had but it wasn't more than the number they scored. "For the second goal the officials let us down poorly. The ball isn't far away from being crossed and he's come on. They know they should wait until the ball's in the opposition half. It's hard to take having got back into the game. I'm extremely disappointed not to get three points, never mind one. "We need to keep believing and moving forward. The energy level was very good, we kept pushing and having lost the second goal I think we can count ourselves very unfortunate to have lost the game. "Performances normally determine how many points you get and where you finish in the league table. Four of our five performances so far have been very good."
