Robbie Simpson believes Oldham's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final defeat dealt a huge blow to their League One campaign.
Simpson moved to Boundary Park on loan in September and secured a short-term contract during the January transfer window having been left out in the cold at Huddersfield. He memorably opened the scoring in the same month's FA Cup loss at Liverpool as regular doses of cup action appeared to be boosting Paul Dickov's squad, before Chesterfield secured a surprise 3-1 aggregate win and Oldham subsequently limped to a 16th-placed finish in the third tier. "All the emotions from that difficult period (at Huddersfield) came out in that one moment in which I scored at Anfield and it made everything I went through worthwhile," said Simpson, who is currently mulling over a new deal with Latics, in the Oldham Chronicle. "I honestly thought, after the way we performed in that first half that we could push on in the league. But then Chesterfield happened. In the first leg of the semi-final, we missed a penalty and then they scored from a dodgy one. "I still don't know to this day how we didn't score in that second leg. We gave it everything and the defeat really knocked the wind out of our sails."
