Brown: Cup can boost league form

Phil Brown feels his Preston side's cup win over Charlton could have positive ramifications on the race for promotion.

North End eased to a 2-0 win at The Valley to book a Carling Cup third-round date at Southampton next week, but Brown expects to see the side's current form continue in both competitions. He said: "It was very pleasing because I came to see Chris' team in the last round against Reading and at the weekend - despite the changes, the philosophy of playing is the same. "My hat is off to Charlton as they've gone top of the league without playing and I'd gladly swap this cup win for a league win. "To be able to dictate and control the game as long as we did, I was delighted, and to keep a clean sheet was a testament to a lot of hard work from the defenders. "It's a good test when you come to The Valley and they're a team flying high in our division but the lads proved tonight that they can do it."
