Hess says striker vital for Gills

Image: Hessenthaler: Needs striker for new campaign

Manager Andy Hessenthaler claims signing a new forward is more important than appointing a new coach for Gillingham's new campaign.

The Gills have striker Adam Birchall out injured, but the club's tight budget is making signing players very difficult. As a result, Hessenthaler is having to redistribute finances from elsewhere in order to pursue his transfer interest. "If we get an injury to (Danny) Kedwell, with Dennis Oli not fully fit and Stefan Payne injured, we really would be struggling," Hessenthaler told Kent Online. "We've got a couple of strikers on the radar and we will see. We might have one in before Saturday." Gills youth boss Darren Hare will continue to deputise as assistant manager while the position remains vacant.
