Leeds United midfielder Alan Thompson has announced his retirement from professional football.
Thompson, who had been club captain at Elland Road, has reached the decision after Leeds' failure to secure promotion to the Championship.
The 34-year-old's final appearance was in the Whites' 1-0 win at Swindon Town at the start of March and he had also been out on loan at Hartlepool United last season.
He started his career at Newcastle United and also enjoyed spells at Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Celtic before joining Leeds, initially on loan, in January 2007.
Good memories
Thompson won a solitary England cap against Sweden in 2004 and he feels it is the right time to call it a day.
"I've had a good career, but I've decided to call it a day," Thompson told the club's
official website
"The high point was playing for England, but I've got plenty of good memories.
"I'm going to take a bit of time out now, but I would like to stay involved in the game."
